June 29, 2021

Nestlé International Travel Retail is proud that Smarties has become the first confectionery brand to achieve Travel Retail Sustainable 5*Hero status. The accolade was awarded at TRB’s inaugural Travel Retail Sustainability Week for the investment by and commitment by Nestlé that has resulted in Smarties using recyclable paper packaging for all its products in travel retail. Smarties is the first global confectionery brand to switch to recyclable paper packaging and represents one of Nestlé’s key sustainable packaging initiatives in the confectionery category. It is a further milestone in the company’s ambition to make all its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. In the Smarties Pitch, the Sustainable Week judges and attendees saw how Nestlé has invested and developed new packaging processes and materials to achieve the packaging goals. It also highlighted Nestlé Cocoa Plan that has been building a more responsible supply chain for cocoa with better farming and better lives for all those involved a key element. Nestlé is committed to sourcing 100% of its cocoa through this plan, while all its current travel retail confectionery products now carry the Cocoa plan logo. In considering the Smarties Pitch and awarding the highest Hero status, the judges described Nestlé’s investment as “a great change in process for the consumer and product”, calling it “a step change in the industry”. The judges were “impressed with the clear message on the packaging that gives consumers a choice and prompts a change in thinking”. They were also impressed with the sustainable Cocoa Plan which they suggested added significant value to the say that Nestlé work and deliver change. Says NITR general manager Stewart Dryburgh: “With this award, Smarties has achieved another industry first – not only the first travel retail confectionery brand to switch to recyclable paper packaging but also the first to receive a Sustainable 5 Star Hero award. We’re delighted to have received this recognition. Our thanks also go to Travel Retail Business for providing the industry with the means to demonstrate our sustainable commitments and goals.”
